I bet most of you never knew that all Google operating systems are named alphabetically. He he! Not just that, actually, all the code names are confectionary themed, i.e. they are named after several desserts.
Google has quite the sense of humour, don’t you think? And, although the first OS version ‘Android 1.1’ was not named after a dessert, it was called ‘Petit Four’. However, the first significant Android operating system version ‘1.5’ started with the letter ‘C’ and is called ‘Cupcake’
Now let’s take a look at the code names of every Android software from the version which was designed a decade ago to the most recent.
Cupcake Android 1.5
Donut Android 1.6
Éclair Android 2.0
Froyo Android 2.2
Gingerbread Android 2.3/2.3.7
Honeycomb Android 3.0/3.2
Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0
Jelly Bean Android 4.1
KitKat Android 4.4
Lollipop Android 5.0/5.1
Marshmallow Android 6.0
Nougat Android 7.0
Oreo Android 8.0
Pie Android 9.0
News has it that Android pie will soon followed by a tenth operating system ‘Android Q’, although the code name isn’t known yet, Google however has released the developer beta and, the final launch is expected to happen in August.
